I Got Sober to Become a Better Mother
For Kelly Preston and John Travolta, "our kids are the center of our universe," the Old Dogs actress said on Lifetime's The Conversation With Amanda de Cadenet Thursday.
The mother-of-three, 49, explained that giving birth to son Benjamin Hunter Kaleo in November 2010 gave her a new perspective on motherhood. "It's different in that I'm so much wiser," she revealed. "I know myself so much more now." (She and Travolta, 58, are also parents to daughter Ella, 12. Their son Jett died from a seizure in January 2009.)
Preston added: "I'm so different, too. Now I don't drink anymore. I don't smoke anymore. I don't do drugs anymore. All of those come with an 'anymore.' I used to do everything and a lot of everything."
For Preston, the decision to get sober wasn't difficult. "With drinking, I just decided that I wasn't always at my best. There were times where I drank too much, for sure."
The actress -- married to Travolta since 1991 -- also disliked "not being myself with my kids, or just with my life 100 percent of the time. And when I didn't drink, I felt amazing, and I woke up feeling amazing every single day."
Said Preston: "For me, I find that our kids came in half the time to teach me about myself and to help me with others, and they have helped me so extraordinarily."
Preston's interview was conducted months before Travolta was accused of sexual battery by two male masseurs. The Saturday Night Fever actor's lawyer, Marty Singer, has denied the allegations.[usmagazine.com]
